Reminder: The Medium comes out tomorrow

Out of all the games that are Xbox Series X/S optimized right now, The Medium will have the most eyes on it. Why is that, you ask? Because The Medium is a Series X/S title only. It will not come out on the Xbox One. There will be no past-gen experience available for this game. It is fully tailored to take advantage of the new Xbox hardware, and that alone is worth setting time aside for it.

I’ll be playing through most of the game (if not all of it) tomorrow. I’m certainly not the type of guy who enjoys scary games. In fact, I tend to quit most of them as soon as something scary starts chasing after me. But for this one, I am going to tough it out. I will journey through The Medium from start to finish, and knowing me, I will keep all the lights on while doing so.

The sites I spend the most time working for now, SVG and Looper, will have plenty of coverage for the game over the next few days. I personally will be writing some of the content about The Medium, so be sure to head over there and check those articles out.

By the looks of it, reviews for The Medium are looking pretty promising. Make a note for yourself to start playing this one when it goes live tomorrow. In the meantime, if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber or if you’ve pre-ordered the game, you can download it in advance. That’ll let you get started as soon as possible.

January 2021 Xbox release dates

The first month of the year is slim pickins.

How’s the new year been for you so far? The end of 2020 brought us brand new consoles, a slew of blockbuster titles, and Stephen A. Smith bashing the Dallas Cowboys at The Game Awards. In an otherwise ghastly period, those are at least a few highlights we can point to. Now, though? The calendar has been tossed in the garbage and replaced with a new one. With that, it’s time to talk about January 2021 Xbox release dates.

The Medium release date: Jan. 28, 2021

Some of the launch-window Xbox Series X and S titles still don’t have release dates. The Medium, fortunately, is no longer one of them. The spooky horror game from Bloober Team (Layers of Fear, Blair Witch) now has its own spot on the calendar. The Medium release date is Jan. 28, 2021, and it’ll launch on Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and PC.

If you don’t remember this one from Microsoft’s various video presentations over the past year, here’s a refresher description straight from the source:

“Become a medium living in two different worlds: the real one and the spirit one. Haunted by the vision of a child’s murder, you travel to an abandoned hotel resort, which many years ago became the stage of an unthinkable tragedy. There you begin your search for difficult answers. As a medium with access to both worlds, you have a wider perspective and can see more clearly that there’s no one simple truth to what others perceive. Nothing is what it seems, everything has another side.”

Even better, there’s a new trailer to go along with the release date announcement that arrived today. You might want to turn some lights on and maybe grab a friend for comfort before you click play.

I personally can’t handle scary video games. It’s odd, because I love scary movies. There’s something about controlling a character in a horror game that puts a different spin on things, though. You’re no longer passively watching someone else in danger — by transporting yourself into the character, you are the one in danger. You are the one being chased by spirits, disfigured beings, and what have you. It is a lot more stressful and a lot more scary. I cannot bring myself to do it.

But maybe you love horror games! If that’s the case, Bloober Team is one of the best at putting them together, and now you have a release date for the studio’s next outing. Good luck.

The Medium just got delayed to January

This is a little bit of a bummer, as the Xbox Series consoles are already short on new exclusives. The Medium, while not a launch day title, was at least something that could’ve been considered “launch window.” It was originally scheduled to arrive on Dec. 10, 2020.

Bloober Team — the developer behind the title — is blaming COVID-19 for the delay, along with “the current schedule of other games on the market.” One has to believe Bloober Team is referring to Cyberpunk 2077 here. That game was originally scheduled to launch this month, but after a short delay, will instead release on Dec. 10, 2020 — the date The Medium had picked out prior to today.

Maybe there is a silver lining to all of this, though. If you were really looking forward to The Medium, but also want to play Cyberpunk 2077, now you won’t have to choose between the two.
