If the release of Ikenfell and Forza Motorspot 7 into Xbox Game Pass wasn’t enough, there’s actually another game coming to the service today (albeit for console only). You can enjoy some action-strategy rock ‘n’ roll weirdness by downloading Brutal Legend right this instant. And if you’re saying to yourself, “Wow, that character looks a lot like Jack Black,” that’s because the man who voices the character is, indeed. Jack Black.
Jack Black in a video game. You know that’s gonna be a whole lot of crazy.
In case you wondering why this title has all of the sudden surfaced after so many years (it was originally released in 2009), I have some theories:
- Microsoft owns Double Fine, which developed the game. That makes it a natural fit to include in Xbox Game Pass, which holds almost the entirety of Microsoft’s first-party output.
- EA published the game the first time around, and likely has the publishing rights to it on console. Since Microsoft just made a deal with EA to merge EA Play with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, it’s possible the company also worked out some kind of arrangement to get Brutal Legend into Xbox Game Pass.
- Jack Black is voicing yet another character in a Double Fine game — this time, he’s a “mysterious ball of light” in the upcoming Psychonauts 2. This is a good reminder to fans who enjoyed Brutal Legend that Jack Black and Double Fine are teaming up once more.
With that, go download and play the game if you’re an Xbox Game Pass subscriber. It’s there, it’s not going to cost you anything extra — why not?
