What’s old is new again, and at long last, Xbox fans finally know what new studio The Initiative has been working on these past few years. During the 2020 Game Awards, it was revealed that the Perfect Dark franchise will be getting its first new entry since the Xbox 360’s Perfect Dark Zero in 2005. It is simply called Perfect Dark, and while we’re starting to get a sense of what the game might be, the Perfect Dark release date currently eludes us.

That’s not to say we simply came away with words and promises. An intriguing teaser trailer debuted during the Game Awards that you should absolutely watch. It seems “eco-fiction” will be the name of the game here, as some sort of climate disaster will serve as the driving force for secret agent Johanna Dark to do her thing.

A nice interview video also went up on the Xbox YouTube channel. Some of the folks at The Initiative talk about the game they’re trying to build, mentioning how aspects like movement will attempt to set the game apart from everything else.

One thing that absolutely seems certain at this point: this game is nowhere near finished. A 2022 release might even be generous. Based on how the devs at The Initiative talked about the game — in the sense they are “building” versus they “built” — this feels like something we could see in 2023 or even 2024. This will arguably be Xbox Game Studios’ first quad-A (AAAA) title. It is going to take time.

With that being said, I’m pretty excited to see the end result. This is a brand new team, comprised of talent from studios like Sony Santa Monica, Crystal Dynamics, and so forth. Perfect Dark is going to be end up being a very important game, both in terms of how people view The Initiative and Xbox Game Studios as a whole. Let’s hope we get to check out more of it soon. If we don’t, though, you shouldn’t panic.
